With Stadtpfarrkirche Leoben St. Xaver Leoben offers one of the most beautiful Jesuit churches in Austria. Simple from the outside, the interior of the church overwhelms the visitor. The interior, decorated in black and gold, is from the so-called "Jesuit Baroque" in the rich cartilage and auricular style. The high altar and pulpit are from the 17th century.

Waasen-Kirche is an outstanding example of Gothic architecture in Styria. Of particular artistic interest are the windows in the choir, which depict scenes from the life of Jesus.

The evangelical Gustav Adolf Kirche is by a special decoration far superior to many other churches. The stained-glass windows, of high artistic and content quality, bathe the interior of the building in a fascinating softly colored light during the day, and at night the windows shine in the most vibrant colors.

Equally worthwhile is a visit to the Stift Göss, the oldest monastery in Styria with architectural and artistic treasures. Of particular art-historical interest are the early Romanesque crypt under the choir of the church, the early Gothic frescoes in the Chapel of St. Michael (in the so-called Zackenstil) and the imposing roof truss of the church. If desired, the visit can be combined with a guided tour of the adjacent Gösser Braumuseum, beer tasting included.

You want to explore the surroundings on the second day?
The Roman Catholic Basilika Mariazell is the most important place of pilgrimage in Austria, a visit to the same almost a must. The culturally and historically significant furnishings with the Chapel of Grace and the high altar are immensely impressive. Visitors to Mariazell also enjoy the famous gingerbread, during a tour of the Lebzelterei Pirker. The time-honored art of gingerbread baking is on display in an area of more than 3,500 square meters..

Or you visit the Benediktiner-Stift Admont with the world's largest Monastic library, one of the great total works of art of the European late Baroque. Visit the Gothic Museum, the Natural History Museum and the Art History Museum and stroll through the grounds, including the herb garden.

With the exception of Göss Abbey (2km), all the churches described here are within a 10-minute walk. Mariazell and Admont can be reached by coach in about 90 minutes each via freeways or national roads. Bus parking and infrastructure for groups are available at both locations.
