On the way to Graz, shortly after Frohnleiten, one can spot this special fortress. Built on steep rocks,overlooking the river Mur, Fortress Rabenstein was used to protect the trade route between Bruck a. d. Mur and Graz 900 years ago. Today Fortress Rabenstein is an impressive reminder of baroque architecture.

Unique and fascinating – Revitalisation

Fortress Rabenstein was built at the beginning of the 12th century. Ever since then it has undergone multiple expansions and reconstructions. The two halls, masterpieces of baroque architecture, were built during the second expansion and are still astounding many tourists to this day.

In 2005 the fortress was bought and renovated by DI Werner Hochegger. Thanks to his commitment the fortress has become a unique tourist attraction.

Additionally, the 45th lord of the castle added alterations, such as the rotating panorama elevator or the floating “Hochegger Keusche”. Further, the entire fortress is barrier-free.

Historic heritage, modern usage

Today the fortress is run by Jürgen Unterrainer and his team. The fortress is being used for weddings, exhibitions, conferences and events. State-of-the-art technology combined with historic architecture create the perfect conditions for memorable events.

Our tip: Traveling by coach and combined options

It will take you about 40min to get to Fortress Rabenstein by car or coach, via S6 and S35. A tunnel next to the coach parking leads you and your group directly to the rotating panorama elevator.

Visiting the fortress is also possible for older people or people with limited mobility, due to the fortress being barrier-free.
